Volume 1 contents

Here’s the updated contents list for volumes 1:

VOLUME I

Volume I contains Bacon’s earliest writings, dating from 1584 to 1596. These are largely occasional pieces, some of them written to commission, but they indicate the range of Bacon’s interests: from letters of advice to legal opinions, from theatrical court entertainments to substantial evaluations of contemporary religious politics, notably An advertisement touching the Controversies of the Church of England (1589) and Observations made upon a Libell (1592). All but one remained unprinted during Bacon’s lifetime, and the vast majority circulated in manuscript anonymously. Despite this, it is possible to see the development of some of Bacon’s characteristic preoccupations and arguments throughout these diverse early writings.
